Artist Statement

People often remark that my work has an organic look and a microscopic point of view. Those who know of my microbiology background believe that must be the explanation. However, that is only part of the story. My images could just as easily be a view from an airplane window.

In the most general sense, I am intrigued by what I call "the closer look." While this way of seeing certainly includes observing bugs and other "whatnots," it also recognizes self-reflection, and the pleasures of expressing love, sadness and kindness.

Most of my prints consist of 2 to 5 different plates. The bottom plates provide color, shape and contribute light and dark values. The top-most plate contains the information and captures the underlying content. I work using a mixture of printing techniques that include various combinations of monotype, copperplate etching, collagraph, linoleum and mezzotint. As I once explained to a colleague, I do whatever it takes to give the ink its voice.
