I fell in love with clay because it is full of possibilities, of balance, line, and volume on the cusp of becoming something else, made permanent by firing the piece: A curve defines and becomes an edge -- or does the edge expand into the curve? I try to capture that sense of frozen time, of possibility, of interpretation depending on perception. No two pieces are exactly alike, reflecting instead the particular moment they were created. I enjoy pushing technical boundaries and am expanding my physical "canvas" with the increased size of my most recent work, the Emergence series of sculptures and the Flower bowls.
My hand-built work is eclectic, since I enjoy experimenting with glaze, surface technique, color, subject matter, and shape. I mostly use paper clay for its combination of strength and forgiving qualities; it allows me the flexibility to adjust the balance of a pot on its base so that it is cantilevered rather than centered, or refine the curve of an addition while it is still malleable. Almost all my work is slab-built, and electric fired to cone 6.
